Vietnam to Put First Nuclear Power Plant into Operation in 2020

Vietnam will complete and approve investment studies of its first nuclear power plant by 2010, start construction of the plant in 2015, and put it into operation in 2020, according to the Prime Minister’s latest Decision No 01/2006/QQÄ-TTg.
 
Under the decision, which was signed on January 3, the Prime Minister approved the country’s strategy for the application of atomic energy for peaceful purposes until 2020.
 
The strategy mentioned the situation and prospects of applying atomic energy and Vietnam’s point of views, goal, and tasks of the application.
 
Vietnam is likely to choose Phuoc Dinh commune in the central coastal Ninh Thuan province’s Ninh Phuoc district as the location of the country’s first nuclear power plant.
 
Under the pre-feasibility study conducted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the nuclear power plant comprises of two reactors with a combined capacity of 2,000MW, and is estimated to cost US$4 billion.

The government is considering technology from Canada, Germany, and France for the plant. About 6,000-7,000 workers will be needed for the construction.
