Norway, UK Pledge Aids to Vietnam's Shipbuilding Industry

Norway and the United Kingdom have pledged to provide nonrefundable sponsorship of 21.11 million Norway Kroner (US$3.45 million) to develop the emerging shipbuilding industry of Vietnam, local media said.
 
Of the fund, the Norwegian Government will provide14.9 million Kroner, Norway’s Det Norske Veritas AS, an international registry agency, 3.11 million Kroner and UK’s Graig Shipping 3.11 million Kroner.
 
The fund beneficiaries are Vietnamese shipyards, including Vietnam’s largest shipbuilder Vinashin.
 
Vinashin, the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, is building various ships for a UK shipping firm worth hundreds of millions of US dollars and the corporation is under negotiation to make ships for Norwegian firms.
 
Vinashin is building sixteen 53,000-DWT cargo freighters for Graig Investments Co. of the UK. The first ship is expected for delivery in several months.
 
Vietnam, the world’s 11th largest shipbuilder, is able to build ships of up to 70,000 tons.
