The Thai Nguyen Non-ferrous Metals Co. Ltd, under the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin), inaugurated a mill producing zinc by electrolysis in northern Thai Nguyen province yesterday December 20.

The mill, built in Song Cong Industrial Zone, Song Cong town, in 2003, is the first of its kind in Vietnam and the second in Southeast Asia.

The new facility at total cost of VND200 billion (US$12.5 million) has a designed capacity of 10,000 tons of zinc a year.

The factory has already produced nearly 3,000 tons of non-ferrous zinc, reaching 70 per cent of its designed capacity and replacing imports from South Korea, China and others, providing jobs for many local residents.
