Danish brewer Carlsberg Tuesday said it has inked a deal with state-owned Hanoi Beer and Beverage Corp. or Habeco to build a brewery in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

The joint venture, named Hanoi-Vung Tau JSC (HVB), will be located in Vung Tau city, around 50 km far from Vietnam’s southern hub HCM City and have initial capacity of 500,000 hectoliters.

Carlsberg said it and Habeco will acquire 29 per cent of the venture each, but did not name the remaining holders.

The venture will have a strong brand portfolio, the Danish brewer said, consisting of the Carlsberg brand as well as Habeco's Hanoi Beer, the leading brand in northern Vietnam.

Earlier this year, Habeco and Carlsberg formed a strategic alliance making Carlsberg become an assistor for Vietnamese partner in technology transfer, knowhow and marketing.

Carlsberg entered Vietnam in 1993 through the formation of at joint venture with Viet Ha Brewery owned by the Hanoi Peoples Committee. Carlsberg owns 60 per cent of South East Asia Brewery, which is the name of the operation.

In 1995 the second Carlsberg joint venture was founded through cooperation with the Hue Peoples Committee in Hue Brewery, of which Carlsberg owns 50 per cent.

Habeco has enjoyed annual growth rates of over 20 per cent for many years and its factories spread from the north to the central region.

Carlsberg said beer consumption in southern Vietnam is about 9 million hectoliters a year, almost 60 per cent of the country's total consumption. (VNA, Thanhniennews)
