Sumitomo group of Japan is seeking approval from Vietnamese relevant agencies to build a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of 2,640 megawatts in central Khanh Hoa province.

The plant is estimated to cost US$3.8 billion and is hoped to locate in Ninh Thuy commune, Ninh Hoa district in the southern part of Van Phong Bay, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Vietnam’s current electricity development plant, however, mentions no thermo-power plants in the Van Phong Bay.

The Vietnamese government reportedly approved a project to build a steel plant and a 1,000-MW thermal power plant in the northern part of the Van phong Bay by a joint venture between Posco group of South Korea and Vinashin of Vietnam. (Industrial Executives’ Briefing Issue)
