Sumimoto to Build US$160 Mln MDF Plant in Southern Vietnam
Japan-based Sumimoto Co. has asked for permission from southernmost Ca Mau province’s People Committee to pour US$160 million into building a MDF plant here, the Vietnam Economic Times reported.
According to the company’s plan, which has just been introduced to the committee, Sumimoto will invest around US$60 million or US$70 million in the first phrase to build tiny wood processing plant with the annual capacity of 250,000-300,000 cubic meters.
In the second phrase, the company will pour between US$80 million and US$90 million into construction of a MDF plant which will be capable of producing 250,000-300,000 cubic meters of MDF plank yearly.
The company said its analysis showed that Ca Mau’s cajuput wood is suitable for MDF production.
Under the province’s development strategy toward 2010, the province will allow Sai Gon Investment Group to invest US$200 million to build a MDF plant with total capacity of 400,000 cubic meters a year.
The province has also agreed to provide cajuput wood for the US$1.2 billion pulp and paper mill to be built by LEE & MAN Group in Hau Giang province.
Ca Mau is now home to around 37,000 hectares of cajuput. But nearly half of which are under threat of forest fires in dry season. (Vietnam Economic Times)
