A joint venture between Korean KMDK Limited Co. and Refrigeration Electrical Engineering Corp (REE) – an affiliate of Vietnam Machinery Installation Group (Lilama) – on Sunday started construction of a clean development mechanism landfill gas plant (CDM-LFG) in Ho Chi Minh City at a total cost of US$30 million.

The 6-MW plant will be fed with biogas disintegrated from sweepings at Phuoc Hiep 1 and Phuoc Hiep 1A rubbish dumps in Cu Chi district, and Dong Thanh dumping ground in Dong Thanh commune of Hoc Mon district.

Once operational for the first phase in 2010, the CDM-LFG is capable of not only generating 42 million kWh of electricity a year, ensuring sufficient power supply for 20,000 local households, but also reducing carbon dioxide discharge by 225,000 tons per year.

CDM is a market mechanism for the transfer of technology and financing to clean energy projects. (Pioneer)
