The Vietnam Rubber Group (VRG), the biggest rubber producer in Vietnam, set a plan to grow an additional 200,000 hectares of rubber trees in neighboring Laos and Cambodia.

The decision is resulting from expectation that the world’s demand for rubber will rocket in the next decade.

Dinh Van Tien, head of VRG’s importing-exporting office, said the VRG will grow 100,000 hectares of rubber in each country, adding that the group has so far planted 10,000 hectares in Laos, and 4,000 hectares in Cambodia.

But Navarat Kaewpratarn, a senior expert from the Bangkok-based Future Agri Trade Ltd, said VRG’s plan will make the world’s rubber sector’s future more gloomy.

Vietnam’s rubber output is estimated to decrease from 660,000 tons in 2008 to 630,000 tons this year. (Vietnam & World Economy)
