Vietnam PM: Beefing up Anti-protectionism Fights, Econ Reforms

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has appealed to leaders of the Future of Asia conference in his keynote speech to tighten fights against protectionism, beef up the economic reforms, part of necessary moves to head off the global downturn.
 
“We should strengthen cooperation and cooperation among Asian economies within the WTO, Apec, Asem,” Mr Dung emphasized, proposing six steps to help the Asian economy recover from the current global crisis toward a bright future.
 
Mr Dung urged for top priority to improve confidence and build up fundamentals for sustainable development, cooperation needed for freer trade in Asia to overcome the turmoil, deepening interlinks between sub-regions, increasing roles of Asia in the global trade as well as financial reforms.
 
On this occasion, the Vietnamese prime minister urged for maintaining peace, stability, settlements of disputes on land and waters via negotiations and abiding by UN conventions, particularly UN Conventions on Sea Law.
 
Combating natural disasters and epidemics is also an urgent task, Mr Dung added.
 
Vietnam, as a WTO membership, has developed trade ties with 220 countries and territories with average growth of 20 per cent over past two decades, and has reported more than 10,000 FDI projects with registered capital of US$160 billion invested by over 80 countries, Mr Dung said in a statement.
