Ha Long Shipbuilding Company, an affiliate of Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin), launched a 70,000 DWT car-carrying vessel on Tuesday, July 21 in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

The Victory Leader vessel, the first of its kind in Vietnam, is capable of carrying 4,900 cars.

The vessel, built under a contract with the Israeli RAY shipping company, is 189.3 meters long, 32.2 meters wide and 38.9 meters high.

The launch, which took place earlier than scheduled, proved the vessel’s good functioning before being put into use, said Vinashin General Director, Pham Thanh Binh,.

Vinashin Business Group saw its revenue grow 25 per cent on-year between January and May despite the slump of the domestic shipbuilding industry, said the firm’s General Director, Ngo The Viet.

The group has maintained major contracts through 2010 and several other contracts through 2012, Viet said, adding that his group is employing 80,000 workers.

The official noted that his firm is trying to reach the goal of obtaining US$1 billion from ship exports in 2010. (News, VNA)
