Vietnam Speeding up Preparations for $1B Gas Pipeline in South
The management board of the southwestern gas project under the state-run Vietnam Oil & Gas Group (PetroVietnam) is speeding up preparations to start construction of the Block B-O Mon gas pipeline worth $1 billion in the southern city of Can Tho within the year, according to the head of the board, Pham Hong Linh.
The 398-kilometer gas pipeline includes a 246-kilometer section of pipeline offshore with the remaining 152 kilometers of pipeline stretching over the five Mekong Delta localities of Can Tho City and the provinces of Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau.
Once fully operational in July 2011, the pipeline will transport between 16 million cubic meters and 18.3 million cubic meters of gas per day to feed the 2,640 MW O Mon power center in Can Tho City, Linh said.
The contractor, Vietnam-Russia Oil and Gas Joint Venture (Vietsovpetro), is coordinating with authorities in the five localities to conduct a study for site clearance of a 120-kilometer long and 55-meter wide area for the project.
Earlier, Vietsovpetro built the 325-kilometer gas pipeline linking the southeastern region to the Ca Mau gas-power-fertilizer complex to feed the Ca Mau 1 and Ca Mau 2 power plants, which have a combined capacity of 1,500 MW. (Vietnam & World Economy)
