Vietnam is estimated to have fetched $203 million from exporting rattan and bamboo products in 2010, the government’s General Statistics Office (GSO) said.

The figure represented an on-year rise of 13.6% in value, the GSO added.

Vietnam has around 700 handicraft villages specializing in rattan and bamboo products. However, the country is facing input shortage at around 100,000 tons per year to meet the sector’s annual growth of 10% to 15%.

Currently, Vietnam imports nearly 33,000 tons of rattan per year.

To tackle the problem, the Southeast Asian country will plant at least 15,000 hectares of rattan to 2020, said the MARD’s General Forestry Office. (GSO)
