Vietnam landed in the 53rd place in the Information Technology (IT) Industry Competitiveness Index in 2011, rated by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) and the Business Software Alliance (BSA), showing three notches up from last year.

The Index benchmarks 66 countries to identify fields each country needs to focus on to increase its competitiveness. A series of indicators includes overall business environment (accounting for 10%), IT infrastructure (20%), human capital (20%), research and development (25%), legal environment (10%), and public support for industry development (15%).

To be in the 53rd place, Vietnam gained 60.8 points for overall business environment, 23.5 points for IT infrastructure, 23.5 points for human capital, 0.2 points for research and development, 50 points for legal environment, and 43.5 points for public support for industry development.

The US and Finland respectively ranked 1st and 2nd in the Index.

Projects to make Vietnam become a strong IT nation and policies to promote e-Government,  have helped Vietnam realize its targets competently, confirmed a BSA representative.

BSA has suggested that Vietnam should need to increase investment in the training of IT human resources, innovation and intellectual property.
