Hoa Sen Group: Making Vietnamese Steel a Globally Known Brand

Intensive investment
Hoa Sen Group, established in 2001, specialises in manufacturing steel pipes, galvanised steel, coloured corrugated iron, galvanised corrugated iron, cold corrugated iron, purlin, plastic ceiling, plastic pipe and other products. The group is running a nationwide distribution system with more than 106 branches from Lang Son province in the north to Ca Mau province in the south. Not running after higher risk investments in real estate and finance like other businesses, Hoa Sen Group persists in its core businesses: manufacturing corrugated iron and construction materials of high quality, beauty and competitiveness. With clearly defined criteria, in recent years, the group has continually made intensive investments for enhancing quality personnel, improving corporate governance and modernising production lines. With the right investment decisions, within 11 years, Hoa Sen Group has emerged as the industry leader in Vietnam, with 40 percent of domestic corrugated iron market share, and is the top manufacturer and exporter of galvanised corrugated iron in Southeast Asia.

Especially, the company’s new thick galvanised steel is drawing huge domestic demand because similar imports have high tariffs. With its continuous investment for machinery renovation and technology development for better quality and stronger competitive advantage of products, in 2010, Hoa Sen - Phu My Corrugated Iron Factory put into operation Southeast Asia’s first thick galvanised steel line with annual capacity of 450,000 tonnes and Southeast Asia’s largest colour plated steel line with annual output of 180,000 tonnes. These modern lines help Hoa Sen Group enter the high-quality galvanised steel and cold corrugated iron markets, serving civil and industrial construction demand. Since the two lines came into operation, the quality of Hoa Sen Group products has constantly improved and the price has become more competitive. But, most importantly, imported products have been gradually pushed back from the Vietnamese market. Besides, the proportion of its exports has surged. At present, its exports account for 30 percent of its total revenues. It is an important platform for Hoa Sen Group to develop effectively in the context of global integration and become a leading economic group in Vietnam and in the region.
 
In addition to Hoa Sen - Phu My Corrugated Iron Factory, the second phase of Construction Materials Co., Ltd project continues supporting the development of Hoa Sen Group in the steel pipe and plastic pipe markets. With six new steel pipe production lines installed, which bring the total output to 200,000 tonnes a year, Hoa Sen Group aims to join the club of top steel pipe producers in Vietnam. Additionally, the completed installation of European plastic pipe production systems is an important basis for Hoa Sen Group to advance to the Top 3 plastic pipe producer position in Vietnam. Vu said, “Focusing on intensive investment, renovating technologies, improving product quality and building a massive distribution system have helped Hoa Sen Group secure a strong market position today.”
 
Community brand
In addition to quality policy, Hoa Sen Group also has many attractive, trusted after-sale policies. To date, Hoa Sen Group’s products have an established presence nationwide. Hence, the firm’s revenue growth is very impressive. Its revenue totalled only VND2,000 billion in 2008 but soared to VND8,200 billion in 2011 and is expected to reach VND10,000 billion in 2012. Apart from the domestic market, Hoa Sen Group’s products have also secured a strong footing in foreign markets such as Japan and Australia. Its monthly exports range between 12,000 and 15,000 tonnes.
