US$512.65Mln Planned for Water Environment in HCM City
Ho Chi Minh City will continue to implement the second phase of a project to improve the water environment in the city with a total investment of VND8.1 trillion (US$512.65 million).
Huynh Ngoc Si, Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Transport and Public Works released the information, adding that the capital will come from a Japan Bank for International Cooperation’s (JBIC) soft loan and the Vietnamese State budget.
The project will improve the water environment in the valleys of the Tau Hu, Ben Nghe, Doi and Te canals in Ho Chi Minh City.
Earlier, the project’s Management Board and the Japanese contractor, the TOA Corporation, jointly signed bids on water environment in Ho Chi Minh City with a combined funding of VND237 billion (US$15 million), of which a bid with a total capital of VND120 billion (US$7.59 million) aimed to upgrade the Tau Hu-Ben Nghe canal route.
Currently, as much as 40 per cent of the city’s total wastewater is unprocessed before being discharged into local drains, mainly canals, causing serious pollution of both surface and underground water. Worse still, the city’s drains are now capable of transporting only 50 per cent of a total 600,000 cubic meters of sewage per day because most are outdated and leaky. Young People
