Boeing to Test in-Flight Internet on Flights to Vietnam
The Ministry of Post and Telematics (MPT) has allowed Connexion by Boeing, a division of the aircraft producer Boeing, to supply wireless Internet services on a trial basis on international flights via Vietnamese territory from now to May 30 next year, state media reported.
Under MPT’s decision, this is the first time the cyber services will be launched on flights to the South East nation provided by Asiana Airlines, China Airlines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines Limited, Etihad Airway and Korean Air.
Thanks to the service launch, passengers on board with a laptop can gain access to the Internet as well as corporate intranet services, live television, transmit and receive of data, and other services.
The service networks based on 914.00-14.25 GHz bands when taking off and 12.20-12.24 GHz band for landing supplied by Connexion by Boeing must ensure they will not jam the transmission of other information and telecommunication networks, satisfying both Vietnam’s and International Telecommunication Union’s standards.
Connexion by Boeing, which was earlier authorized by these airliners to propose an application for this service, will be responsible to report the results of trial of the Internet service later to MPT.
Boeing launched the service in 2000 hoping to provide air travelers with data communication services via a space-based network for about the same price as cellular phone services.
