PetroVietnam Fertilizer and Chemical Joint Stock Company (PVFCCo) and the Office Cherifien des Phosphates (OCP) of Morocco May 9 signed a deal to build a fertilizer plant with total investment of US$600 million in the African country, state media reported.

The Tin Tuc (News) said the plant will be capable of producing from 660,000 to one million tons of diamonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer to supply to Vietnam and other regional markets.

The DAP plant, which will be built soon, is expected to be commissioned from 2011, becoming the Vietnam’s biggest project invested abroad so far.

The two companies also mapped out a joint plan to build an ammoniac plant in Vietnam or a third country when natural gas supplies for the project are sufficient.

Vietnam, the world’s second biggest rice exporter, has to wholly import potassium and DAP fertilizer because it has no mines to produce, while it must import 50 per cent of urea, local media said. (Pioneer, News)
