The Vietnamese government has recently decided to choose southern Tra Vinh province as a location to build a coal-fired plant costing US$4 billion, the Pioneer newspaper said.

The Duyen Hai thermal power plant will be the biggest of its kind in Vietnam with a capacity of 600,000 megawatts, and will be jointly carried out by the governments of Vietnam and Czech Republic, the newspaper added.

The plant is expected to supply electricity for the whole Mekong Delta region of Vietnam when fully operational.

Detail information about the project’s estimated output, the time for the start and operation has not yet been made available.

A deep water port will be also built nearby the coal-fired plant to facilitate coal transportation, the newspaper noted.

Vietnam is facing an adverse power thirst, which is estimated at 8.6 billion this year.

The country aims to lean to thermal power generation sources after 2010, to raise total capacity of thermal power plants to 15,497 MW by 2011; 27,261-27,811 MW by 2015; 36,721-40,111 MW by 2020; and 52,871-65,111 MW by 2025. (Pioneer)
