The Song Da Corporation is speeding up works on 44-MW Binh Dien 9-MW Nam Mu hydropower projects in an effort to put them into operation early next year, the Pioneer newspaper reported, citing the corporation’s sources.

The corporation, in early this month, received permission from Vietnamese and Laotian governments to invest US$400 million in Xe Bang Hieng 1 and Xe Bang Hieng 2 hydropower projects in Savannakhet province of Laos.

It has also jointed hands with the state-owned oil monopoly PetroVietnam group to build 1,410-MW Luong Prabang hydropower plant in the neighboring country with an expected for groundbreaking in 2009.

Vietnam will invest in 31 hydropower projects in Laos with a combined capacity of over 5,000 MW by 2020.

The two governments have a cooperation agreement in the field of electricity generation, with Laos agreeing to supply Vietnam with 3,000 MW by 2020.

Laos entered into an agreement with Vietnam for the production of hydroelectric power in July 1998, for the export of about 2,000 MW of power to Vietnam between 2003 and 2010. (Pioneer)
