The Project Management Board 85 under the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport and the Japanese contractor partnership of IHI and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Company inked a VND10.2-trillion (US$573.033 million) contract on August 23 to build the Nhat Tan Bridge.

The contract is for the construction of the main part and northern approach viaduct for the bridge in Hanoi. This contract is the largest and the most important among the three bidding packages of the project.

The bridge, with a total expected investment capital of VND13.6 trillion, will connect the city center with industrial parks (IPs) in the north, including the North Thang Long-Van Tri, Dong Anh-Co Loa, and Gia Lam-Sai Dong-Yen Vien IPs.

It will also complete construction of the second belt road and shorten travel time from the city center to Noi Bai International Airport.

The 9-km Nhat Tan Bridge project, including the 3.7km bridge crossing the Red River, is the longest bridge in Vietnam.

Work on the bridge, which is 33.2 meters wide and divided into four lanes with two for buses and two for other vehicles, is expected to be completed in October 2012. (Saigon Liberation, Young People)
