Viettel Climbing to No. 1 Mobile Phone Retailer

Viettel started selling mobile phones in Vietnam nearly three years ago in addition to its core business - telecom services. The military-run company is climbing to the No. 1 position in Vietnam after occupying 25 per cent of the market share with the total sales of roughly 3 million handsets.
The market demand is denting due to economic recession so that fewer people are ready to spend on new mobile phones. Therefore, Viettel’s month-on-month growth of 15 - 20 per cent in a long time is seen as a marvellous result.

To celebrate its milestone of 3 million handsets sold out, Viettel Retail will present immediate gifts, valued between VND130,000 and VND300,000 each, to buyers of its mobile phones from now to October 15, 2009. Apart from free phone decoration, buyers will have chance to join lucky draws at weekends. Highly valued gifts will be given to buyers of 3 millionth cell phones and the next 30 customers. There are many reasons for the impressive expansion which remain unknown to many.

First of all, Viettel’s retailing system primarily imports a wide range of genuine products, around 300 models at present, from world-acclaimed producers like Nokia, Samsung and LG. Thus, customers can find any products at Viettel shops.

The second weapon is the price. A representative of Viettel said the company always tries its best to provide the most competitive products to the market. Fundamentally, the company expects small return on product to increase sales. Larger revenue means larger profits.

The first secret is the promotion programme. As a mobile network operator, Viettel, in addition to gifts as other retailers, present extra gifts like SIM cards or telephone credit cards with value amounting to VND150,000 each. This is an added value which is very attractive to phone buyers.

To serve a large number of customers, the Viettel Retail has opened 110 shops in all provinces and cities in addition to nearly 800 telecom service and end-user device shops in the country. In addition, Viettel is also operating an online shop, called ViO, with a monthly turnover of billions of Vietnamese dong.
