Vietnam: 80% Consumed Energy Sourced from Fossil Fuel
Up to 80% of consumed energy in Vietnam are sourced from fossil fuel, and most of the fuel are imported from foreign countries, according to the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Commission for Science, Technology and Environment, Dang Vu Minh.
However, energy use in the country is not yet efficient. In order to manufacture the same amount of energy, production plants in Vietnam have to use a fuel volume that is between 1.5 times and 1.7 times higher than those used by developed nations, Minh said.
The energy efficiency of coal-fired and gas-fuelled power plants across Vietnam is estimated at between 28% and 32%, which is 10% lower than similarly fuelled plants in developed countries, Do Huu Hao deputy minister of industry and trade said.
The energy efficiency of industrial steam furnaces across the country is estimated at around 60%, which is 20% lower than the average level in other countries, Hao added.
Vietnam is estimated to waste around US$1 million worth of energy per day due to inefficient use. (Saigon Liberation)
