Vietnam Sept CPI up 0.62% On-Month, Softens to 7.64% in Jan-Sept: GSO

Vietnam’s consumer price index (CPI) for Sept rose 0.62% from Aug and up 7.64% over the first nine months of this year, the government’s General Statistic Office said.
 
In the month, a sharp hike in CPI was led by education products as the new school year started, followed by transportation and housing costs, the GSO said.
 
In September CPI was up 4.11% from December, the GSO added.
 
In Sept, education costs are estimated to have jumped by 4.33% from Aug and by 6.18% from last Sept. Transportation and postage costs are estimated to have gone up 2.37% on-month and to fall 6.18% on-year.
 
Housing and construction material costs are estimated to have been up 0.87% on-month and to go up 0.71% on-year.
 
Food and foodstuff services are estimated to have fallen 0.05% on-month and 1.79% on-year. Rice is estimated to be down 0.85% on-month and down 8.67% on-year while foodstuffs will be up 0.17% on-month and up 3.96% on-year.
 
Apparel, footwear and hats are estimated to have increased by 0.67% on-month and to have raised 7.3% on-year. Drinks and tobacco rose 0.75% on-month and 8.31% on-year.
 
Medicines are estimated to have increased 0.19% on-month and to be up 3.79% on-year.
 
Cultural, sports and recreation services are estimated to be up 0.25% on-month and up 3.33% on-year. Domestic appliance prices are estimated to be up 0.37% on-month and 6.31% on-year.
 
The government usually issues CPI figures based on estimates before the end of the reporting period.
 
In Vietnam, gold is estimated to have gone up 2.04% on-month and up 26.06% on-year while the U.S. dollar is estimated to have weakened against the Vietnamese dong by 0.23% on-month and to strengthen 9.52% on-year.
 
In the first nine months, the CPI in urban areas in Vietnam is estimated to have risen by 0.97% on-month and to be up 8.29% from a year earlier while the CPI in rural regions is estimated to have risen by 0.34% on-month and 7.14 on-year. (GSO)
