African cashew-growing nations may stop shipments of raw cashew nuts to Vietnam, India and other countries; instead they will build processing factories.

The African countries including Ivory Coast reached a consensus at the Annual Conference in Abidjan 2009 organized by African Cashew Association.

Vietnam imports 300,000 tons of raw cashew nut from Africa a year, or 40% of its demand, the newspaper said, adding due to unprofitability of cashew cultivation, local farmers are switching to plant other crops.

Currently, Vietnam has 421,000 hectares of cashew plantation and 225 cashew nut processing enterprises with a combined capacity of 700,000 tons a year. (Vietnam Agriculture)
