Production value of Vietnam’s agricultural, forestry and fisheries sector is estimated to have increased 4.7% from a year earlier to VND232.7 trillion in 2010, the government’s General Statistics Office said.
Of the sum, the agricultural sector posted on-year growth of 4.2% at VND168.4 trillion while production value of forestry sector was VND7.4 trillion, up 4.6%, and fisheries sector VND56.9 trillion (+6.1%).
The country’s rice output reached nearly 40 million tons this year, up 1.04 million tons on-year as total paddy fields expanded by 76,500ha to 7.513 million hectares and rice productivity hit 0.53 tons per ha.
Vietnam also saw sharp increases in both cultivation area and output of many crops of high values such as maize, coffee, rubber, pepper, cashew, tea and vegetables for domestic consumption and export.
Thanks to favorable weather, the country cultivated 252,500 hectares of forest trees this year, up 3.9% on-year. Local timber output increased 7.3% on year to 4.04 million cubic meters.
Fisheries continued to affirm itself as key economic sector with a total output of over 5.13 million tons, representing an on-year increase of 5.3%. Nearly 2.7 million tons of the sum were harvested from aquaculture farms while the remainder was caught offshore.
In 2010, export of agricultural, forestry, and seafood products are estimated at $19.15 billion, rising 22.6% from 2009.
Seafood, wooden products and rice each recorded an export turnover of over $3 billion while rubber saw an export turnover of $2 billion, and coffee and cashew earned over $1 billion in export turnover each.
Agriculture plays an important role in Vietnam’s economy and is the foundation for the sustainable development of society and economy, politics, security and national defense. It also creates jobs, income and raises residents’ living standards. (GSO)
