General Electric (GE), one among six leading groups in the U.S. rated AAA grade, has decided to invest US$50 million to build the first plant in the northern city of Haiphong, General Director Jeffrey Immelt said last Friday.

The plant will specialize in producing spare parts of electric equipment, which will be then shipped to GE’s global production plants to manufacture completed products.

The construction on the plant will start in late 2007 and is due for operation at the end of 2009 to employ around 400 people.

GE chose Haiphong City the plant’s location as it is one among Vietnam’s important sea ports and is a northern industrial center, facilitating material input supply and product transportation, said Kovit Kantapasara, director of GE Energy in Vietnam.

GE has joined many Vietnam’s projects, supplying equipment and machineries for Song Hinh, Ham Thuan and Quang Tri hydropower plants, and Pha Lai 2.2 thermo-power plant.

The U.S.-based group has also provided engines for airplanes of Vietnam Airlines while supplying medical equipment for Friendship, Vietnam-Germany, Vietnam-France and Thanh Hoa General Hospitals.

“GE will do its utmost to become long-term and reliable friend of Vietnam”, said Jeffrey R. Immelt. (VietNamNet, VNA)
