The American insurance group (AIG) is the first and only non-life insurance company in Vietnam to grant insurance policies via the internet. In spite of having only opened in September 2007, eMarine 1.7 has received strong support from customers and users.
For over 10 years, AIG used an eMarine programme to grant insurance policies via the internet. The eMarine programme is regularly upgraded at AIG offices worldwide. In Europe and several Asian nations, AIG is applying eMarine 2.2. In the US, AIG is using eMarine 2.3 with many new features such as invoice issuance, network connection and customer database. Since its operation in Vietnam in early 2006, AIG has developed the eMarine 1.7 programme. In September 2007, AIG officially introduced eMarine in Vietnam after several modifications and a trial run in August 2007. Customers in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Hanoi and northern provinces have used eMarine to grant insurance policies and declare insured goods. Users of AIG’s eMarine are mainly exporting companies with stable import-export volumes. Some are using electronic customs clearance.
The eMarine 1.7 programme was designed to provide insurance policies for people and objects in remote areas. AIG customers only need to have opening agreements and annual insurance policies, or have regular commodity flows (exported or domestically transported) and need to insure them to settle payment at banks and clear customs procedures. They only need to complete the information required for using eMarine, provided by AIG Vietnam and AIG will provide insurance documents (including username and password). AIG Vietnam will update information about policies opened and other policy database such as agreements between the two sides. Then, customers can input their username and password to have insurance policies granted without going to insurance companies.
eMarine 1.7 has many utilities for both the insurer and the insured. First of all, it is cost-saving for both sides. It takes 10-25 seconds, depending on internet connection capacity, to finish the application. Customers can receive insurance policies anywhere and at anytime, with an internet connection. Especially, customers in remote provinces where there are no AIG offices are still able to obtain insurance policies. Besides, customers can update their insurance information and print insurance policies without needing to send via post or fax. Last but not least, eMarine helps relevant bodies such as customs authorities, bankers or beneficiaries to verify insurance policies via the web link

Following are ideas of some AIG clients:
Ms Nguyen Ngoc Toan, executive of import-export of Dan On Foodstuff Company (Binh Duong)
As an exporter of processed farming and forestry products to the US, Canada and European markets, the company has to buy insurance policies for our exported products to ensure business safety. After many options, we finally chose AIG products. Upon learning about AIG’s eMarine 1.7, we sent staff to AIG to learn and register to use immediately. After only one month of use, we can affirm the eMarine programme is very useful for us. Traditionally, it took us 2-3 days to process insurance policies for commodities via telephone or fax, but it now takes only 30 minutes at most to have AIG insurance policies. In general, the eMarine 1.7 programme helps us to take the initiative and meet the demands of our customers. However, eMarine needs to have automatic save function because sometimes the electricity supply is suddenly cut off or the computer encounters errors and needed to be restarted. All unfinished information is lost after the restart.
Ms Vu Thuy Lien, executive of planning and document division of MIDEA Company (Binh Duong)
Our company began operation in October 2006 and exported its first batches of commodities to the ASEAN market in early 2007. Household electric appliances like cookers, boilers and magnetic oven need to be insured for safety. From the very start, we chose AIG products, because our parent company in China had already used AIG products for a long time. I myself used the eMarine programme when I studied in the parent company in China. In general, eMarine is a useful programme for enterprises because they can check and modify incorrect information online. It takes a short time to make corrections online, but it takes 4 days for a correction in the traditional way. If our customers need commodities delivered on time, a four-day delay costs us money and hurts our reputation. AIG is very considerate when they send staff to our company to offer training for the programme. During the trial period, it took 5-10 minutes to download a PDF file with a signature and seal from AIG. However, it is much faster since eMarine 1.7 started official operation. We are very satisfied with the service provided by AIG.
