Delta Airlines launched direct routes from Vietnam to American markets December 11, becoming the U.S.’s third carrier to operate in Vietnam after the United Airlines and American Airlines, local Saigon Liberation newspaper said.
Delta Airlines will offer services on nearly 20 direct routes linking Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and more than 100 places in the U.S., Canada and Mexico and many other South American countries.
The firm will operate code-sharing flights with Korean Air, Air France-KLM, and China Airlines and some others on these routes.
Delta Airlines has selected Bien Dong (East Sea) Tourism Company as its agent in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The carrier now owns 440 airplanes and transports 100 million passengers per year. It plans to open direct flights from Atlanta to Shanghai March 2008.
Separately, the Vietnamese government has recently licensed the debut of Vietjet, making it the first company in Vietnam doing business in air transport together with Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines and Vasco.
Currently, Vietnam is home to 40 airlines, including 36 foreign ones, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. (Saigon Liberation)
