Squid and octopus exports have set a record high since early this year, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reported.

Vietnam has so far this year earned some $280 million from exports of 80,000 tons of squids and octopus, an annual increase of 21 per cent in volume and 34.8 per cent in value, to account for 7.7 per cent of the country’s seafood export revenues.

Japan remains the country’s top importer, followed by EU countries and the Republic of Korea.

Other items are squid slices, sashimi and flower-shaped octopi.

Between 1997and 2002, Vietnam’s cephalopod export was stable and it mainly exported to Asian countries such as Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan. Since 2004, the Asean country started to ship to European countries. Italia and Spain are top importers in the continent.

According to consideration of Vietnamese leading exporters, the demand for cephalopod is increasing in the world market, especially in EU due to its stable price.

The average prices of exported cephalopod products of Vietnam is in the slightly upward trend with the highest price at $4-5 per kilo in Japan, $2,5-3 per kilo in EU; and about $2.5 per kilo in Korea. (Vasep, Vietnam Economic Times)
