Vietnam Ships $21 Mln Tea Exports in Jan-February

raked in $21 million from exporting 16,000 tons of tea in the first two months of 2008, up 56.6% in terms of value and 14.3% in terms of volume against the same period of last year, the General Statistics Office said.

In February, the country exported 7,000 tons, earning $9 million, while export volume in January was 9,279 tons worth $12 million.

Of the total tea export volume in January, exported 6,237 tons of black tea valued at $7.3 million, down 1.67% in volume and 3.03% in value from December 2007, and down 5.87% in volume but up 27.72% in value on year.

Export prices of Vietnamese black tea are now around $1,180 a ton, down 1.44% from December, but up 35.6% from January of last year. Arab Saudi, and were the three biggest importers of Vietnamese tea in January, with import revenues of $1.34 million; $1.22 million; and $1 million, respectively.

Last year, the country earned $131 million from exporting 114,000 tons of tea, making on year rises of 18.4% in value and 7.8% in volume.

cultivated 125,700 hectares of tea in 2007, producing 704,900 tons, up 2.3% in area and 8.6% in volume compared with 2006.
