Vietnam is estimated to have exported 398,000 tons of coffee in the first quarter of 2008, down 25.8 per cent over the same period of last year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) reported.

The GSO said the country earned US$795 million from the export, a slight rise of 2.7 per cent on year, mostly thanks to high prices nearly during March.

In March, Vietnamese companies shipped 150,000 tons of coffee, raking in US$330 million, down from 248,000 tons worth US$465 million in February, or by 39.6 per cent on month in volume and nearly 30 per cent in value.

Coffee prices are now standing at around VND35,500 a kilo in central highlands provinces, the Vietnam’s coffee hub.

The prices had rocketed to VND40,500 a kilo early March, the highest level over the past 14 years in Vietnam, the world’s second biggest coffee exporter. (GSO March Edition)
