High demand for seafood from Egypt will facilitate Vietnam to finalize the target of export US$45 million worth of product to the foreign country in 2008, local media reported.

So far this year, Vietnam notched up US$30 million from seafood exports to Egypt.

The Vietnam News Agency said Egypt imports around 2 million tons of seafood a year, with 30,000 tons worth US$300 million coming from other countries. Shelled shrimp and tra and basa catfish are most wanted seafood products in the country.

Ahmed Hamed Ahmed shop owner in the Giza market says “Egyptian consumers like Vietnamese tra and basa catfish very much because of cheap prices, high quality and being easy to cook. Each day, I can sell 20-30 kilos of basa and up to 800 kilos per month. These products sell widely in Cairo and other big cities in Egypt.”

Banh Quang Ha, director of the Quy Nhon frozen joint stock company informed that the company will boost its exports, including frozen shrimps, tuna and codfish to Egypt.

To help Vietnamese seafood exporters enter the market where import tax rate stands at zero percent, the Vietnamese Embassy in Egypt has reminded businesses to keep their goods in line with the hygiene and quality requirements, as well as strictly observe their contracts’ technical qualifications.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers said Egypt’s demand for seafood will rise by 10 per cent in the next five years due to a population increase and a greater number of foreign residents.

In 2007, Vietnam raked in more than US$20 million from seafood exports to Egypt, a 4.7 fold increase over previous year. (Vietnam & World Economy, VOV)
