The Philippines continued to take the lead among 18 importers of Vietnamese rice with a total volume of 1.78 million tons worth US$819.9 million in the first half of this year.

The ASEAN country’s rice import, however, dropped 18.26% in volume and 3.42% in value from a year earlier, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said on its website.

The Philippines’ import volume is unlikely to rebound in the rest of the year as newly-appointed chief of the National Food Authority, Lito Banayo, said that the nation will stop importing rice from now till end-2010 due to the exceeding volume of imported rice.

Singapore was Vietnam’s second largest rice buyer with a total imported volume of 339,046 tons worth US$138.8 million, up 134.4% and 110.6% on-year, respectively.

Meanwhile, exports to Taiwan, the third largest importer, posted highest growth to 230.2% on-year in volume and 213.3% in value at 288,874 tons worth US$111.5 million, respectively.

Vietnam’s other importers included Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Africa, Belgium, Australia, Indonesia, Cuba, Poland, Russia, the Netherlands, France, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Spain. (vinanet)
