Trade between Vietnam and Russia is estimated to have fallen to $1.7 billion this year from $1.83 billion in 2009, an official from the Russian Trade Office in Vietnam Alexandr Kardo Sysoev said.
Vietnam has exported $700 million worth of commodities to Russia and imported $1 billion, the official said a workshop on supporting Vietnamese businesses to boost exports to the Russian market held in Ho Chi Minh City on December 23.
These figures remain modest in comparison to the two sides’ potential, he added.
Vietnam and the Customs Unions held the first meeting of a joint working group for a bilateral trade agreement in Hanoi on October 11. This was an important milestone for the countries to implement the next steps for early signing of the FTA, which is expected to bring in huge benefits to all parties in terms of economics, trade, services and investment.
Vietnam and Russia expect to push up bilateral trade to $3 billion in 2012 and $10 billion in 2020. (Vietnam & World Economy)
