An Giang to Trademark Its Fresh Water Products

The southern province of An Giang is carrying out a project to introduce a trademark for fresh water products in the Mekong Delta.

The province has applied models of rearing "tra" catfish and blue prawn shrimp in ponds, "tra" and "basa" catfish in cages and processing aquatic products which meet the international standard, Safe Quality Food (SQF) 1000 CM.

An Giang is one of Vietnam's provinces taking the lead in enhancing its fishery trademark. The province has advantages of zoning off safe aquaculture areas and a typically high product quality, according to the Ministry of Fisheries.

Nguyen Huu Dzung, Director General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP), said that Vietnam has diversified its aquatic products. However, the country has mainly exported aquatic products with importers' labels or foreign distributors' trademarks. Almost all seafood exporters and processors do not have their own trademarks yet, he said.
