Ninh Binh Develops Infrastructure for Industrialisation and Modernisation

Over the past years, Ninh Binh province has made significant efforts to develop its infrastructure facilities, which play an important role in the industrialisation and modernisation process.

The province has invested in upgrading its material base for the local post and telecommunications service. It had 31,712 telephones in 2003, with 28,133 fixed telephones and 3,579 mobile phones. Also, Ninh Binh has invested in upgrading its electricity and water supply systems to meet the demand of local people and enterprises. Ninh Binh has road, railway and waterway systems convenient for economic exchange and co-operation. The province now has 1,500 kilometres of roads with four national highways with a total length of 111.5 kilometres. These include the national highways of 1A, 10, 12B, and 45. The inland waterways under the management of central agencies include the Day and the Hoang Long rivers, and the Le dynasty canal with a total length of 165 kilometres. The inland port of Ninh Phuc links the mouth of the Day River with the East Sea. The port can receive 1,000 tonne ships with a handling capacity of 1.4 million tonnes of cargo per year. After a project to build the port and dredge the river completes late this year, the port will have a capacity of between 2.5 million and three million tonnes of cargo per year. Inland waterways under the management of local agencies include 18 rivers with a total length of 221.8 kilometres. Ninh Binh has a 16 kilometre coastline with the mouth of the Day River opening to the East Sea, linking Ninh Binh and the world. The trans-Vietnam railway crosses the province parallel to national highway 1A with four stations. Under transport development plans of Ninh Binh, by 2010, the province will have upgraded transport facilities to meet the economy’s requirements. Accordingly, the province will have a well-developed system of roads, linking Ninh Binh town with districts and towns. Commune centres will have asphalt roads. All national roads will be upgraded to at least the fourth level. Roads in towns will be of a suitable size for modern requirements and will be asphalted.

In waterways, the province will have centrally-run ports for the transportation of goods between the Red River Delta and Central Vietnam. The local waterways and ports will be dredged and upgraded for the transportation of goods within the province. The Ninh Phuc port will be upgraded to receive 1,000 - 1,500 tonne ships with a handling capacity of between 2.5 – 3 million tonnes per year.

The province will upgrade the trans-Vietnam railway according to master plans of the national railway service. The construction of railways connecting the mainline to local industrial parks and especially to the Ninh Binh port and the Tam Diep Cement Plant will be completed. By 2010 passenger trains will be able to run at a speed of between 70 and 80 kilometres per hour and cargo trains between 55 - 60 kilometres per hour. After 2010, the province will integrate with the trans-Asia railway route.

Thanks to great efforts to develop infrastructure and facilities, Ninh Binh province’s transport service is making further contributions to the province’s socio-economic development.
