The Hanoi General Statistics Office has announced that the capital’s consumer price index (CPI) in May slightly increased month-on-month due to raised petrol prices, which made the transportation category’s CPI surge.
The El Nino weather has made rice prices jump in the last months. It is forecast that the hot weather will prolong the situation, causing rice prices to continue to rise.
In addition, traders have purchased pigs to export to China, making pork prices increase, while shrimp prices climbed due to scarce supply in the north. Seafood prices were quite stable and prices of several types of vegetables fell by 10-30 per cent month-on-month.
The category of clothing, clothes and footwears saw slight changes as the summer demand increased while that of housing, power, water, fuel and construction materials rose month-on-month as gas prices were adjusted up to VND5,000-7,000 per 12kg tank from the beginning of May.
In the first two weeks of May, retail petrol prices were adjusted to rise due to sharp increases in petrol prices in the world. On May 5, the prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene were raised by VND640, VND650 and VND550 per litre respectively.
The gold price rose by 1.5 per cent over the previous month while the US dollar price climbed slightly by 0.01 per cent.
