The Vietnamese Government has approved the building of the Hanoi-Thai Nguyen Expressway with total investment capital of VND4 trillion (USUS$254.7 million), funded by the Japanese Government.
The 61-km expressway, which is designed to have 6 lanes with maximum speeds of 100 km/h, starts in the Dong Anh district and finishes in the route near Thai Nguyen City in the National Road 3.
The project is expected to build four lanes in the first phase and the other two in the second phase. The route will have 23 traffic crosses, ten large bridges with total length of 2,300 meters, one medium and 16 small bridges, two fee collecting stations and other works.
The Hanoi-Thai Nguyen expressway will play a very important role in the transportation infrastructure network of the north as well as in Vietnam. Construction of the expressway linking Hanoi with Thai Nguyen will boost the socio-economic development process of Hanoi with new urban areas like Noi Bai and Soc Son.
The expressway will go through many social and cultural centers such as Dong Anh, Soc Son, Song Cong and Thai Nguyen. It will share 70 per cent-80 per cent of the transport circulation with the National Road 3.
The Prime Minister has instructed the Ministry of Transport to urgently complete preparation works and kick off construction in 2005.
