Hanoi will carry out the second phase of a World Bank-funded US$382 million traffic development project between now and 2010 in a move to ease the traffic overload in the fast developing city.

Half of the money will come from the WB loans.

“The project is aimed to encourage people to use public transport”, director of the Urban Traffic Management Board (UTB) Do Duc Huan said.

The project will mainly focus on developing the public transport network including the rapid bus network worth US$80 million, building and upgrading infrastructure for the belt-roads 2 linking Nghia Tan Bridge and Buoi street, the Hoang Quoc Viet and Nam Thang Long streets, UTB official said.

The project will spend US$100 million on improving the Cau Giay’s and Buoi’s traffic routes, according to the Hanoi Department for Public Transport & Administration.

Meanwhile, under the project, US$16.8 million will be used to raise the efficiency of traffic management units, carry out surveys on air quality and equip modern signal facilities for the rapid bus network.

In a related move, the capital city of Hanoi will also inject US$140,000 into resettling local people displaced by the over mentioned project.
