Cities and provinces in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam are investing US$178 million to upgrade the seaport system to receive ships weight from 3,000 tons to 5,000 tons. These seaports, once fully improved, are expected to handle 13 million tons of goods each year, the newspaper reported.

The Southeast Asia country planned to build four more wharfs with a total length of 665 meters in southern Can Tho city. They will handle 2.5 million tons of goods once in place in 2010.

Work has been completed at the first wharf of 165 meters, and are going with planned pace in the three others, the newspaper added.

Vietnam now has 266 seaports handling more than 80 per cent of the total imports and exports and is estimated to need US$5 billion to build and upgrade its seaport systems from now to 2010. (Vietnam & World Economy)
