Construction on 4,400-megawatt Duyen Hai thermal power center will be kicked off this June in southern Tra Vinh province, said the state-owned Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN).
The coal-fired power center will be built on a 325-hectare area in local Dan Thanh commune, Duyen Hai district at a total cost of US$5 billion, the group said.
The center is expected to start operation in 2012.
However, information about the project’s electricity output has not yet been made available.
Currently, seven power centers have been operational or under construction or planned for construction in Vietnam, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The ministry has recently asked Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN) to prepare for building of an additional eight power centers by late 2008, raising the country’s total number of power center to 15.
Vietnam is facing an adverse power thirst, which is estimated at 8.6 billion kWh this year. (Vietnam Economic Times)
