Vietnam’s spending on animal feeds and animal feed materials may reach US$3 billion in 2008, from US$1.1 billion in 2007, due to high prices, the Animal Husbandry Department forecast.

The department said prices of almost all kinds of animal feeds have soared so far this year, up by 14.3 per cent-142.3 per cent on year.

In the first eight months of this year, Vietnam imported US$1.341 billion worth of animal feeds and animal feed materials, up 70.4 per cent against the same period of 2007.

In Jan-June, the country imported two million tons of oil-cake, 400,000 tons of corn, and 200,000 tons supplemented feed.

India was the biggest exporter with total value of US$538.3 million, followed by the U.S., China, and Argentina with USUS$74.9 million; USUS$67.7 million; and USUS$64.7 million, respectively.

Currently, Vietnam’s animal feed supply can meet only 70 per cent of total demand. The country have to import 20 per cent-30 per cent of starch feeds like maize, manioc, and up to 70 per cent-80 per cent of protein feeds like fish meal, and bone meal. (Vietnam Economic Times, GSO)
