Japan will allow imports of Vietnamese dragon fruit, which will be treated at a steam sterilization plant that will be built in Vietnam by Japanese firm, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced recently.

Rather than the irradiation required by U.S. quarantine authorities, dragon fruit exports to Japan will have to undergo steam sterilization, the Japanese chamber said.

A Japanese firm will build Vietnam’s first steam sterilization plant by the end of this year, the chamber said.

The chamber said that the importation of Vietnamese mangos was also under consideration by Japanese authorities.

Vietnamese dragon fruit is currently sold to Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, China, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the U.S.

Nearly 28 tons of Vietnamese dragon fruit has been exported to the U.S. in the first half this year, 10 tons of which were shipped by sea. (Youth)
