Vietnam is forecast to earn around $300 million from rattan and bamboo exports this year, said Department of Processing and Trade for Agro-forestry-Fisheries Products and Salt Production under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

The country’s rattan and bamboo products are present in 120 countries and account for about 20% of the world’s market-share, the department added.

In fact, Vietnam is facing the input shortage. The country needs around 100,000 tons of rattan and bamboo per year to meet the sector growth of 10% to 15% annually.

Currently, Vietnam imports around 33,000 tons of rattan per year.

To tackle the problem, the Southeast Asian country will grow at least 15,000 hectares of rattan from now to 2020, according to the MARD’s General Forestry Office.

Rattan is naturally grown in the northern provinces of Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen and Yen Bai, the southern provinces of Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa and Dong Nai, the central province of Quang Nam and the central highlands provinces of Gia Lai and Dak Lak.

The rattan and bamboo sector attracts around 342,000 workers in 723 handicraft villages nationwide. (Countryside Today)
