Hai Phong is 102 km away from Ha Noi and is located in a favorable location for exchange with other provinces in the country. A system of roads, railways, waterways and airlines service the city of Hai Phong. Hai Phong borders Quang Ninh province to the north; Hai Duong province to the west; Thai Binh province to the south; and the East Sea to the east.

Hai Phong’s terrain is very diverse, which reflects a long and complex process of geologic history. The northern part of Hai Phong has the appearance of a midland area with plains alternating hills while the southern part of the city has low and relatively flat terrain with a plain area sloping to the sea.

Haiphong has a long coastline of over 125 km. Hai Phong's offshore territory is populated with many islands scattered across the sea of which Cat Ba island is the largest. Thhe furthest island is Bach Long Vi island. Sea, coast and islands have created the unique natural landscape of this coastal city. This also is also one of the potential strengths of local economy.

Thanks to geologic history and geographic location, Haiphong has many advantages and potentials: there is one iron mine in Duong Quan (Thuy Nguyen), one zinc mine in Cat Ba (despite small reserves), beach placer (Cat Hai and Tien Lang), kaolin mines in Doan Lai (Thuy Nguyen), the clay mine in Tien Hoi and Chien Thang (Tien Lang). Calcareous stone is mainly distributed in Cat Ba, Trang Kenh, Phi Liet, Dun ferry; mineral water in the Bach Dang commune (Tien Lang). Salt and sand which are available mainly in the floodplain areas and beaches, in the Cat Hai, Tien Lang, Vinh Bao, Kien Thuy, Do Son districts are Hai Phong’s two most important natural resources.

The marine resource is one of the special resources of Hai Phong with nearly 1,000 species of shrimp, fish and tens of species of seaweed which has a high economic value. Dragon shrimps, prawns, crabs, tortoise-shells, oysters, dolphins, pearls, snout otter clams, ear shells. These seafoods are preferred in the world market. Hai Phong Sea has many fishing grounds, of which the largest fishing ground is around Bach Long Vi Island with high and stable reserves. In addition, there are coastal areas, and the tidal areas at over 12,000 hectare. Estuaries have capablity of both exploitation and aquaculture of salt water and brackish water producing seafoods with high economic value.
The strategic objective is that by 2020 Hai Phong will have had rapid and sustainable development and become a industrial city moving towards modernizing, before 2020. To achieve this goal, the orientation of Hai Phong in the near future is to focus on mobilizing all resources of all economic sectors, bringing into play the advantages of geographical location, associated with appropriate economic restructuring, cooperatinging closely with the Northern key economic region in unison with the country’s other economic regions.
