Thai Nguyen, the capital of wind and mountains, is a place with a painful but heroic history in the national liberation revolution. Today, with its advantages, the tourism industry of Thai Nguyen province has made significant strides, contributed to the development of economy, the conservation of historic monuments, and the upholding of traditions. Vietnam Business Forum Magazine has an interview with Ms Nguyen Thi Le Thu, Director of Thai Nguyen Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, on this aspect.
Endowed with enormous advantages for tourism development, could you please tell us about the remarkable achievements of Thai Nguyen province’s tourism industry?
Since 2005, the national action programme on tourism development has been aggressively carried out in Thai Nguyen province. Many tourism planning projects have been completed and put into effective operation, such as infrastructure development for Nui Coc Lake tourist zone, and supportive facilities for war-time safety zones of Phu Dinh and Dinh Hoa. Especially, the year 2007 marked a strong transition in Thai Nguyen tourism development, powered by the successful organisation of the Thai Nguyen Tourism Year 2007 under the theme "Return to the capital of wind and mountains - Northwest war zone.” In 2011, the first International Tea Festival was another stepping stone for the development of Thai Nguyen tourism industry.
In 2011, the number of visitor arrivals to Thai Nguyen province totalled 1.62 million, representing a year on year rise of 12 percent. Revenues from travel, hotel services reached VND115 billion. The province now has 155 hotels and motels with 2,744 rooms, including 886 luxury rooms. There is one international tour operator and nine domestic travel companies.
The efforts of our tourism industry workers have resulted in the successful organisation of these two cultural, sporting and tourism events of national and international significance. The most important efforts are in concerted information and popularity campaigns.
The priority given to cultural, historical and ecological tourism development is considered the right direction for the province. What policies will Thai Nguyen province implement to tap local potential in the coming time?
In the coming years, Thai Nguyen province will endeavour to effectively implement national action programmes on tourism with policies for tourism infrastructure construction investment to improve service quality and train human resources for tourism. We will carry out propaganda and advertising, step up tourism investment socialisation, attract local resources, and canvass organisations and businesspeople to actively conserve and uphold cultural values like historic relics, scenic beauty, festivals and folk games, to lay the foundation for tourism development. We will approve and announce the master plan for Nui Coc Lake tourism zone development.
How has Thai Nguyen province facilitated local tourism companies and attracted tourism investors?
In general, Thai Nguyen province always creates the most favourable conditions for investors, especially tourism investors. Since 2005, basic tourism criteria are very good, with increasing growth, particularly in visitor arrivals, revenue, length of stay, and employment. However, the number of international visitor arrivals to Thai Nguyen remains small, accounting for just 2 percent of the total visitors, with short stay periods.
Several tourism projects have been invested since 2008, including the road to Than Sa archaeological site (Vo Nhai district), and the road to Phu Binh - Dinh Hoa safety zone. In addition, the province now has many ecological - urban tourism development projects like Xuong Rong Lake ecological tourism site (Thai Nguyen City), and Yen Binh urban zone (Pho Yen district).
To attract more tourism investment, first of all, the province will introduce overall and specific development plans, and attract more resources for cooperation development. Besides, Thai Nguyen will step up tourism development and advertising activities, and streamline administrative procedures for investors.
