Seminar on Trademark Building for Farm Produce Opens in Can Tho

A seminar entitled "Building Trademarks for Vietnamese Agricultural Products" was held in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on December 11 with the participation of over 200 delegates from the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD, as well as research institutes, universities, businesses and farmers.

Registering brands for specialty trees and devising a concrete coordination strategy between scientists, farmers, businesses, banks and State agencies are the first tasks to build up trademarks for Vietnamese agricultural products, said the seminar.

The Association of Consumers should disseminate requirements on labeling, help advertise safe fruit and vegetables, and assist farmers to produce high-quality agricultural products.

Over the past years, the country's agricultural sector has made great strides in raising productivity and taken the lead in exporting some kinds of farm produce. However, Vietnamese farmers have suffered from many disadvantages because their products have no trademarks.

At present, more than 90 per cent of Vietnamese agricultural products are exported under trademarks from foreign countries. Nine out of 11 corporations under the MARD have to date registered trademarks for 107 products, and only four of these have been registered abroad.
