Ho Chi Minh City IT and Communications Industry: Unreachable Goals

Ho Chi Minh City’s information technology (IT) and communications industry would earn US$610 million in 2005, the city People’s Committee deputy chairman Nguyen Thien Nhan told the Third National Workshop on Information Technology and Communications held in Hai Phong on September 9-10.

Mr. Nhan said since 2001 the city’s software revenue has expanded an average of 30 percent annually, and hardware revenue has increased 20 percent. This year, software makers in the city expect to achieve US$85 million, including about US$22 million worth of exports; 400 hardware producers, US$270 million; and telecommunications service providers, about US$255 million.

The figures are, however, far below the goals for 2005 including US$250 million in software revenue and US$300 million in hardware production.

Mr. Nhan said the city’s primary IT-communications objectives for the short term include launching a city online gateway at the beginning of 2006 and receiving 100 companies with about 10,000 high-tech workers in the Quang Trung Software City by 2010. For now, there are 65 companies in the software city, including 32 foreign firms with 3,800 workers.
