Many Hi-tech parks have been established in big Vietnamese cities. Ho Chi Minh City has attracted in its hi-tech park such important groups as Hewlett-Packard (HP), Allied Technologies Limited (Singapore), Nidec (Japan), and Intel. Should Can Tho also have its own hi-tech park?
Opportunity
Can Tho plays an important role in the development of the Mekong Delta, becoming City Grade I in 2010 and industrial city by 2020. Therefore, the city can attract resources to develop industries, especially those of high added value, science and technology-intense products. The city is developing infrastructure, upgrading Tra Noc airport, building Can Tho bridge, Cai Cui port, road network, universities, etc. Can Tho will become an important bridge head for domestic and international transports, a strategic position in the Mekong Delta.

In the process of transforming Vietnam to knowledge-based economy, Can Tho has a role to play and should boost economic development, science and technology. Therefore, hi-tech park is not only essential for Can Tho, but the Mekong Delta as well.
Solution
Resolution 45-NQ-TW of the Party Poliburo pointed out : Can Tho should be in the forefront in the industrialization and modernization and become city Grade I before 2010 and industrial city by 2020, a driving force for the development of the whole Mekong Delta. Therefore, first of all, the city must develop education and training, science and technology, in particular high technologies on information, biology (for agriculture, fisheries and health), materials and automation.

Hi-tech park in Can Tho should promote research and application, and attract local and foreign resources, capital and talent. The city should apply preferential treatment for the hi-tech park, focusing on land clearance and infrastructure, taxation and other privileges to attract local and foreign investors. Together with assistance to universities and research institutes, the city should recruit experienced experts and skilled workers to ensure efficient operation of the hi-tech park.
