Can Tho, the largest city in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, has announced detailed planning for five new industrial parks (IPs) with a total area around 8,400ha, raising the city’s total number of IPs to nine, a local newspaper said.

The move aims to meet increasing demand for investors in the city and is also part of the strategy to develop Can Tho into an industrial city by 2020 under a decision approved by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

The zones, to be located in districts far from the central city, include Thot Not IP, O Mon IP, hi-tech Bac O Mon IP, Song Hau Farm IP and Co Do Farm IP. Municipal authorities are now seeking government approval to list these five IPs to the national industrial development plan by 2020.

Four existing IPs, built near the central city, attracted a combined US$35 million investment for ten projects in the first three months this year.

Can Tho City will seek VND251.5 trillion (US$15.82 billion) to develop its industrial sector between now and 2020.

Can Tho strives to maintain annual GDP growth rate of 16 per cent between 2006-10, 17.1 per cent in the 2011-15 period and 18 per cent between 2016-20, with average per capita income of US$1,210 in 2010 US$2,318 in 2015 and US$4,611 in 2020. It also has set a target of earning US$568 million from goods exports this year, up 30.87 per cent on-year. (Vietnam & World Economy)
